04/26/2008
It is a rare kind of cancer. In this type of cancer the malignant cells are normally found in the sac that lines the abdomen or chest. The airborne particles of asbestos, when exposed actually increase the risk to develop this malignant mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma diagnosis is really difficult, as the symptoms of mesothelioma are quite similar to the other normal conditions as well. The diagnosis begins with a normal review of the medical history of the patient suffering from it.
If the medical history of the person shows that the person has an exposure to asbestos, then it may increase the clinical suspicion for this mesothelioma. Then a physical examination of the same is performed. This examination is followed by the X-ray of the chest and also the function tests of the lungs.
The X-ray further reveals the thickening of the pleural that is most common after the exposure of asbestos and results in the suspicion of the disease of mesothelioma. Then CAT scan or MRI is performed. Then through cytology the abnormal cells are detected by observing the large amount of the fluid that is present there.
If the malignant cells are absent, then it doesn’t mean that it excludes mesothelioma, but it can be detected in case if an alternative diagnosis treatment like tuberculosis or heart failure is made. Now if the process of cytology is positive then the mesothelioma doctor begins with the procedure of biopsy is then required to confirm the diagnosis of the disease of mesothelioma.
