Dopamine, an essential and the influential derivative of the amino acid tyrosine is positive and pleasurable mood enhancer. The deficiency of dopamine can result into anxiety disorders, acute depression. The best feature of dopamine is that it is both the inhibitory and the excitatory neurotransmitter and its two different functions depend on the receptor it gets bind with.
Dopamine plays the most important role in pleasure enhancement and mood elevation (thrills and addictions), memory sharpening and motor control of brain. It’s stored in the vesicles present in axon terminal and is released when in excited state.
Low dopamine levels can lead to anxiety disorders, stress, depression, alcohol and drugs addiction, lack of appetite, lack of memory, compulsions, cravings, and degraded motor control. High level of dopamine secretion may result into hypertension, hyperactivity, paranoia, and anxiety.
